‘‘వికసిత్‌ భారత్‌ వైపు అడుగులు వేస్తున్న ఈ తరుణంలోడాక్టర్‌ ఏపీజే అబ్దుల్‌ కలాం జయంతిసందర్భంగా రక్షణ రంగంలో స్వయంసమృద్ధికి ఆయన అందించిన అమూల్య సేవలను స్మరించు కోవడం సముచితం. 1986లో హైదరాబాద్‌లోని డీఆర్‌డీఎల్‌లో కొత్తగా శాస్త్రవేత్తగా బాధ్యతలు స్వీకరించిన నాటి నుంచి నా వృత్తిపరమైన ప్రయాణమంతటా కలాం నాకు మార్గదర్శిగా నిలిచారు. సమగ్ర గైడెడ్‌ క్షిపణి అభివృద్ధి కార్యక్రమంలో, దాని తదుపరి ప్రాజెక్టుల్లో కలాం సారథ్యంలో చిరకాలం పనిచేయడం వల్ల నావిగేషన్, క్షిపణుల రూపకల్పనలో అమూల్య అనుభవం గడించాను.’’
డీఆర్‌డీఎల్‌-డీఆర్‌డీవోలో చేరగానే, అప్పటి డైరెక్టర్‌ డాక్టర్‌ ఏపీజే అబ్దుల్‌ కలాం దగ్గరికి వెళ్లి విధి నిర్వహణ ప్రారంభించాను. డీఆర్‌డీఎల్‌లో ప్రతిరోజూ ఉదయం జరిగే సమావేశాల్లో మా బృందం సాంకేతిక, నిర్వహణాపరమైన సవాళ్లను చర్చించేది. అప్పుడే ఆయన ఏవియానిక్స్ శాస్త్రంపై ఒక పుస్తకాన్ని నాచేతికిచ్చి, చదివి రమ్మన్నారు. ఆ తర్వాత ఆ పుస్తకంపై నా అభిప్రాయాన్ని తెలుసుకుని, నా అవగాహనను అంచనా వేశారు. క్షిపణులకు స్వదేశీ నావిగేషన్ వ్యవస్థలను రూపొందించుకోవడం ఎంత ముఖ్యమో వివరించి, నన్ను నావిగేషన్ బృందానికి కేటాయించారు. కలాం నిర్ణయం నా జీవన పథాన్ని మార్చేసింది. ఆ ఒక్క భేటీలోనే ఆయన నిరాడంబరతను, శ్రద్ధగా ఆలకించే లక్షణాన్ని, యువ శాస్త్రవేత్తల్లోని ప్రతిభను గుర్తించి మార్గనిర్దేశం చేసే గుణాన్ని ప్రత్యక్షంగా చూశాను.
నావిగేషన్ గ్రూప్‌లో కలాం లక్ష్యం ‘హద్దులను ఛేదించి అధునాతన సాంకేతికతను అభివృద్ధి చేసుకోవడం’. అందుకోసం ఆయన ముందుగా యువ శాస్త్రవేత్తలను కలిసి, జరుగుతున్న పనిపై వారి అభిప్రాయాలను తెలుసుకుని, ఆ తర్వాతే వారి విభాగాల అధిపతులతో చర్చించేవారు. చిన్నాపెద్దా హోదాతో సంబంధం లేకుండా అందరి అభిప్రాయాలనూ స్వీకరించేవారు. స్వదేశీ నావిగేషన్ వ్యవస్థలను అభివృద్ధి చేసే రోజుల్లో, మేము వైబ్రేషన్‌ (ప్రకంపన) సంబంధిత సమస్యలను ఎదుర్కొని ఎన్విరాన్‌మెంటల్‌ టెస్ట్‌ ఫెసిలిటీలో చాలా రాత్రులు గడిపాము. ఆయన అర్ధరాత్రి వేళ సాధారణ దుస్తులలో వచ్చి, మాతోపాటు గంటల తరబడి గడుపుతూ నిరాడంబరతకు, నాయకత్వానికి నిలువెత్తు రూపంగా నిలిచేవారు. 1988 చివరిలో అగ్ని క్షిపణి అభివృద్ధి సమయంలో తీవ్రమైన సాంకేతిక సమస్యలు ఎదురై, అసలు మొత్తం నావిగేషన్ వ్యవస్థనే మార్చాలా అని చర్చలు జరిగేవి. ఆ రోజుల్లో కలాం మాతోనే చాలాసేపు ఉండి, సమస్యలపై నేరుగా చర్చించేవారు. చివరికి నావిగేషన్ వ్యవస్థను పూర్తిగా మార్చాల్సిన అవసరం లేకుండానే సమస్యను పరిష్కరించడానికి మా బృందానికి సాయపడ్డారు. పని పూర్తయ్యాక వచ్చిన ప్రశంసలు నాలాంటి యువ శాస్త్రవేత్తకు ఎంతో స్థైర్యాన్నీ, ఉత్సాహాన్నీ ఇచ్చాయి.
అనుక్షణం తోడుగా...
శ్రీహరికోటలో 1988లో జరిగిన పృథ్వి ప్రయోగం నాకు మొట్టమొదటి పెద్ద ప్రాజెక్ట్‌. సాంకేతిక సమస్యల వల్ల మా బృందం తీవ్ర ఒత్తిడిలో ఉంది. ఒక రోజు రాత్రి దాదాపు 11 గంటలకు ప్రాజెక్ట్‌ డైరెక్టర్‌ వి.జె.సుందరం, డిప్యూటీ ప్రాజెక్ట్‌ డైరెక్టర్‌ వి.కె.సరస్వత్, ఇతరులను కలాం తన గదికి పిలిచారు. సాధారణ అంశాలు, తాత్విక విషయాలు, రామేశ్వరం గురించి, ఆలయంలో పొడవైన ప్రాకారాలలో ఒంటరిగా ఉండే ఒక వ్యక్తి ఫొటో గురించి మాట్లాడారు. ఈ విశాల విశ్వంలో ఆ వ్యక్తి స్థానం, పాత్ర గురించి ఆలోచింపజేశారు. మా మనసుల నుంచి ఒత్తిడి నెమ్మదిగా దూరమైంది. ఆ ప్రశాంత స్థితిలో సమస్య తక్షణమే పరిష్కారమైంది. ఇదే ఆయన పద్ధతి: మానసిక ప్రశాంతతను పునరుద్ధరించడం ద్వారా క్లిష్ట పరిస్థితుల నుంచి సిబ్బందిని ముందుకు నడిపించడం, వైఫల్యానికి ఎప్పుడూ భయపడకపోవడం, నేర్చుకుంటారంటే వైఫల్యాలను కూడా ప్రోత్సహించడం- కలాం విలక్షణ శైలి.
మొదటి అగ్ని ప్రయోగం సమయంలో లాంచ్‌ప్యాడ్‌ దగ్గర బృందాలు 72 గంటలపాటు నిర్విరామంగా పనిచేశాయి; ఆయన అంతసేపూ అక్కడే మాతోపాటే ఉన్నారు. ఆయన నిష్ఠ తిరుగులేనిది. రెండు ప్రయత్నాల తర్వాత క్షిపణి ప్రయోగం విఫలమైనప్పుడు మాత్రమే కలాంలో ఒత్తిడి చూశాను. మూడో ప్రయత్నం విజయవంతమవడంతో ఆయనకు ఎంతో ఉపశమనం లభించింది. చాందీపూర్‌ లాంచ్‌ రేంజ్‌ పూర్తిగా సిద్ధం కాకముందే అక్కడి నుంచి క్షిపణి ప్రయోగాలు మొదలుపెట్టాలని సాహసోపేతమైన నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నారు. ఇస్రో నిపుణులు, డీఆర్‌డీవో బృందాలతో కలిసి దాన్ని సాకారం చేశారు.
అదే నిజమైన నివాళి...
రక్షణ మంత్రికి శాస్త్రీయ సలహాదారు అయిన తర్వాత కూడా కలాం ప్రతి శుక్రవారం దిల్లీ నుంచి హైదరాబాద్‌ వచ్చి రాత్రి 9:30 తర్వాత సమీక్షలు నిర్వహించేవారు. ఆయన స్థాపించిన రీసెర్చ్‌ సెంటర్‌ ఇమారత్‌(ఆర్‌సీఐ)ని అప్పటి భారత రాష్ట్రపతి ప్రారంభించారు. అది స్వదేశీ ఏవియానిక్స్, నావిగేషన్ వ్యవస్థల రూపకల్పన కేంద్రమైంది. నేను దానికి డైరెక్టర్‌ అయినప్పుడు, ‘నువ్వు చేసిన పనిని బట్టి ప్రజలు నిన్ను గుర్తుంచుకోవాలి’ అని కలాం సలహా ఇచ్చారు. నేను శాస్త్రీయ సలహాదారుగా బాధ్యతలు స్వీకరించిన తర్వాత, 2015 జులై 6న ఆయనతో చివరిసారి సమావేశమయ్యాను. నాయకత్వం, విధులు, బాధ్యతలపై తన అనుభవాలను, పాఠాలను కలాం నాతో పంచుకున్నారు. ఆ రోజు ఆయన ఆలోచనలలో ప్రధానమైనవి: పునర్వినియోగ క్షిపణి అభివృద్ధి, స్వయంసమృద్ధి కోసం నిరంతర సాధన. ఆ వయసులో కూడా ఆయన చురుగ్గా, ఉత్సాహంగా భవిష్యత్తు ప్రణాళికలపై మాట్లాడారు. ఆపైన కొన్ని వారాలకు విద్యార్థులను ఉద్దేశించి ప్రసంగిస్తూ ఆయన కన్నుమూశారు.
సాంకేతికతలో భారత్‌ను అగ్రగామిగా నిలపాలని కలాం నిరంతరం తపించారు. హైపర్‌ సోనిక్స్, అధునాతన మెటీరియల్స్‌ తయారీ, విస్తృత స్వయంసమృద్ధి సాధన దిశగా ఈరోజు మనం సాగిస్తున్న ప్రయాణంలో కలాం దారిదీపంగా నిలుస్తున్నారు. రామేశ్వరంలో ఆయనకు డీఆర్‌డీవో నిర్మించిన స్మారక చిహ్నానికి రూపకల్పన చేసే భాగ్యం నాకు లభించింది. అక్కడ కలాం జ్ఞాపకాలను పదిలపరిచారు. అయితే, కలాంకు అతిపెద్ద నివాళి- ఆయన స్వప్నించిన స్వయంసమృద్ధిని, సాంకేతికంగా ఉన్నతమైన భారతదేశాన్ని సాధించడమే.

''This step towards a developed India On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, it is appropriate to remember his invaluable services towards self-sufficiency in the defense sector. Kalam has been my guide throughout my professional journey since I took charge as a fresh scientist at DRDL, Hyderabad in 1986. Working for a long time under the leadership of Kalam in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program and its subsequent projects has given me valuable experience in navigation and missile design. rounded">
On joining DRDL-DRDO, I went to the then Director Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and started performing duties. Our team used to discuss technical and managerial challenges in daily morning meetings at DRDL. Just then he handed me a book on the science of avionics and asked me to read it. After that they asked my opinion on the book and assessed my understanding. Explaining the importance of developing indigenous navigation systems for missiles, I was assigned to the navigation team. Kalam's decision changed the trajectory of my life. In that one meeting, I witnessed firsthand his humility, attentive listening, and his ability to identify and guide the talent of young scientists.
Kalam's mission at Navigation Group is to 'break boundaries and develop advanced technology'. For that he used to meet the young scientists first and get their views on the work being done and then discuss it with the heads of their departments. He accepted everyone's opinion irrespective of their status. During the days of developing indigenous navigation systems, we spent many nights in an environmental test facility dealing with vibration-related issues. He used to come in plain clothes at midnight and spend hours with us and was the epitome of humility and leadership. At the end of 1988, serious technical problems were encountered during the development of the Agni missile, and there were discussions about changing the entire navigation system. In those days Kalam used to stay with us for a long time and discuss issues directly. Ultimately helped our team to solve the problem without having to completely change the navigation system. The appreciation that came after the completion of the work gave a lot of courage and enthusiasm to a young scientist like me.

The first big project for me was the Prithvi experiment in Sriharikota in 1988. Our team is under a lot of pressure due to technical issues. One night at around 11 o'clock Kalam called Project Director VJ Sundaram, Deputy Project Director VK Saraswat and others to his room. He talked about general topics, philosophical topics, about Rameswaram, about a photograph of a man alone in the long walls of a temple. It made me think about the person's place and role in this vast universe. The stress was slowly removed from our minds. In that calm state the problem was solved immediately. This is his method: guiding the crew through difficult situations by restoring mental composure, never fearing failure, and encouraging failure to learn - Kalam's signature style.
Teams worked tirelessly at the launchpad for 72 hours during the first fire test; He was still there with us. His loyalty is unwavering. I saw pressure in the column only when the missile launch failed after two attempts. He was greatly relieved when the third attempt was successful. A bold decision was taken to start missile tests from Chandipur launch range before it was fully prepared. It was made possible by ISRO experts and DRDO teams.
That's the real tribute...
Even after becoming the scientific advisor to the Defense Minister, Kalam used to come to Hyderabad every Friday from Delhi and conduct reviews after 9:30 pm. The Research Center Imarat (RCI) founded by him was inaugurated by the then President of India. It became a center for designing indigenous avionics and navigation systems. When I became its director, Kalam advised, 'People should remember you by what you have done'. I had the last meeting with him on July 6, 2015, after I took over as Scientific Advisor. Kalam shared with me his experiences and lessons on leadership, duties and responsibilities. Chief among his thoughts that day were: the development of a reusable missile, the continued pursuit of self-sufficiency. Even at that age, he spoke actively and enthusiastically about his future plans. A few weeks later he passed away while addressing the students.
Kalam constantly wanted to make India a leader in technology. Kalam is leading the way in today's journey towards hypersonics, advanced materials manufacturing and widespread self-sufficiency. I had the privilege of designing the memorial built by DRDO for him at Rameswaram. Kalam's memories were solidified there. But the greatest tribute to Kalam was the realization of his dream of a self-sufficient, technologically advanced India.
