గూగుల్ తోడ్పాటుతో కాలిఫోర్నియా విశ్వవిద్యాలయ శాస్త్రవేత్తలు చేపట్టిన ఒక ప్రాజెక్టు ఈ అంశాన్ని వెలుగులోకి తెచ్చింది. పాత సెల్ఫోన్లను విడిభాగాల కోసం రీసైకిల్ చేయడమో.. చెత్త కుప్పల్లోకి చేర్చడమో జరుగుతోంది. నిజానికి ఇందులో అనేకం ఇంకా పనిచేసే స్థితిలోనే ఉంటాయి. మరోపక్క కృత్రిమ మేధ (ఏఐ) విస్తరణ కారణంగా కంప్యూటింగ్ పవర్కు డిమాండ్ పెరుగుతోంది. ఇందుకోసం విద్యుత్ను భారీగా ఉపయోగించుకునే డేటా కేంద్రాలు అవసరమవుతున్నాయి. ఈ రెండు సమస్యలకు తమ ప్రతిపాదన విరుగుడును సూచిస్తోందని శాస్త్రవేత్తలు తెలిపారు. ఈ విధానంలో పాత స్మార్ట్ ఫోన్ల నుంచి మదర్బోర్డులను సేకరిస్తారు. వాటిని పరస్పరం అనుసంధానిస్తారు. అలా రూపొందిన నెట్వర్క్ భారీగా ప్రాసెసింగ్ శక్తి అవసరంలేని కంప్యూటింగ్ పనులను నిర్వర్తించగలదని శాస్త్రవేత్తలు చెబుతున్నారు. అయితే భారీ ఏఐ డేటా కేంద్రాలకు ఇది ప్రత్యామ్నాయం కాదు. తొలుత దాదాపు 2వేల ఫోన్లతో ఒక కంప్యూటింగ్ క్లస్టర్ను ఏర్పాటు చేయాలనుకుంటున్నారు. ఈ విధానం వల్ల కొత్త కంప్యూటర్ హార్డ్వేర్కు డిమాండ్ తగ్గుతుంది. ఫలితంగా ముడిపదార్థాలు, నీరు, విద్యుత్ను ఆదా చేయవచ్చు. ఎలక్ట్రానిక్ వ్యర్థాలను తగ్గించవచ్చు. అంతిమంగా పర్యావరణానికి మేలు జరుగుతుంది.
