Nursipatnam Rural, Newstoday: Natavaram police, who were carrying out vehicle checks at night to catch thieves of chickens and goats, caught firewood being transported in a van without any permits. Natavaram SSI Tarakeswara Rao handed over the van, which was caught near Adakula in Koyyuru mandal on Friday night, to the forest officials. As this is within Krishnadevipet forest range, the timber was moved from Narsipatnam to Gologonda timber depot on Saturday. SSI investigation revealed that Tuniki trees are being cut down in Rajvommangi forests of Polavaram district and moved like this. Around Rs. It is said that this wood worth Rs 50,000 will fetch up to Rs 2 lakh when it reaches Tamil Nadu.
Fake Karungali Malas?
Many people are wearing Karungali Malas in recent times. Malas with beads made of hard black karungali wood cost thousands of rupees. Police and forest personnel say that fake beads are made from tuniki trees to look almost like these and are sold in the markets. About three years ago, at the Yarravaram check post, a van carrying wood was seized, examined, found to be black and abandoned. When the same van was seized and examined by the Tuni forest officials at Kotanandur in Kakinada district, it was confirmed that the van was full of wood. The growing demand for Karungali Malas is said to be the reason behind the movement of these trees across the states, which the tribals of the region consider to be of no use other than collecting beedi leaves.
When the incident of cutting down Tummika trees came to light in 2023, the officials went to the forests and identified where the trees were cut down. The vigilance officials then found out that some of the seized trees belonged to the land acquired by the tribals under the Forest Rights Act. Again, by accident, Natavaram police got caught. The locals say that there is a lot of smuggling of these trees from Rajavommangi area. According to Golgonda forest personnel, 97 pieces of tuniki were found in size of 1.2 cmt during inspection.
