That is why airlines have made available special diet menus to meet the changing trend and health needs of passengers. From hypertensive and diabetics to fitness lovers, travelers can pre-book the food of their choice. According to International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, the respective airlines provide this facility.

Main diets.. IATA codes

  • Specific international codes are used to mark special foods in the aviation industry.
  • Diabetic Meal (DBML): For diabetics. This formulated diet is free of refined sugar and processed carbs. High fiber diet, complex carbohydrates and low fat diet are served.
  • Low-Sodium/BP Meal (LSML): Low salt diet is given to people with high blood pressure and heart problems. Natural herbs and lemon juice are used instead of salt for taste.
  • Gluten Free Meal (GFML): For those with gluten allergy or celiac disease, this menu is prepared with rice, sorghum, fresh fruits and vegetables without wheat, flour, barley.
  • High-Protein and Asian Vegetarian (AVML/VGML): For fitness lovers, protein food with paneer, pulses, nuts, sprouts are offered.
  • Zain and Low-Calorie Meals (VJML/LCML): Jain meals without ground beetroot, onion and garlic, low-calorie low-cholesterol meals for those who want to lose weight.
  • Not only these..Vegetarian Lacto Ovo Meal (VLML), Kosher Meal (KSML), Child Meal (CHML) are available in many varieties.
  • International Long Distance Flights: Emirates, Air India, Singapore Airlines, British Airways etc. Organizations offer over 20 special diet options free of charge. These should be selected at least 24-48 hours prior to travel.
  • Domestic and Low-Cost Airlines: In domestic airlines like IndiGo, Akasha Air, pre-booked paid meals include protein-rich salads, fruit bowls, detox juices, sugar-free oats cookies.
  • Business and First Class: Meals are prepared and served according to the personal diet plan of those traveling in premium classes.

You can choose the diet option of your choice either for free or for a fixed fee through the select meal option at the time of booking the flight ticket or after the booking is completed through the Manage My Booking section of the airline's website. However, this process should be completed at least 24 hours before the departure of the flight.
