Different weather conditions and cultural traditions in India have many historical, cultural and natural scenic places. They attract tourists from all over the country. Local economic activities are spurring growth. The share of tourism in India's GDP is 5.2 percent in 2023-24. It provides direct and indirect employment to about eight and a half crore people. The Center is implementing programs like 'Prasad, Swadeshi Darshan' to promote tourism which helps the progress of the country. Recognizing the importance of the tourism sector, the Telugu states have also brought special policies. At the same time, the attacks and heinous crimes against those who are coming from distant shores with interest in the touristic areas of our country are disturbing. In this context, AP Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's latest suggestion that a special policy needs to be made for the safety of tourists is feasible. If all the states make a code of conduct on how to deal with tourists and strictly enforce it - the atrocities that are embarrassing the country internationally can be effectively prevented. In the same month, a British woman was molested by two miscreants in a hotel in Delhi. A young German girl was sexually assaulted by a con man who convinced him to show her tourist spots in Hyderabad. A couple of years ago, a prudish man in Nellore tried to rape a Lithuanian woman he met while traveling. In the world-famous Hampi, a symbol of the glory of the Vijayanagara Empire, ten months ago, the Keechakus who raped an Israeli tourist and another woman and killed a man with the victims shocked the entire country. Not only foreigners but also Indians are facing many bitter experiences in tourist places. Less than two years ago, when a family from Delhi went on a trip to Goa, some thugs attacked them with knives. Such inhuman incidents are hindering the progress of the tourism sector.
More than seventeen hundred cases have been reported across the country between 2016-2023 on robbing foreign tourists, taking their lives, kidnapping, sexual assaults etc. Out of that, 111 were related to rapes and 45 were murders. There is no record of swift punishment for those who commit such acts. Many countries mentioning all these situations are warning their citizens to think carefully before visiting India. What a disgrace to the race! Ours is a culture where guests are treated as gods and treated with all manners. It is everyone's responsibility to take care of those who come from hundreds of thousands of kilometers with great expense and hard work, to take care of them with respect and safety. Those who resort to atrocities on tourists should not be ignored. Infrastructure should be increased and security should be tightened at all the sightseeing places. Only then will India's dream of reaching the top position in the field of tourism become a reality.
