Aadhaar like number for EV batteries | Delhi: The Union Transport Ministry has proposed to give a unique identification number similar to Aadhaar number to electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The main objective of this system is to ensure end-to-end traceability of batteries and promote efficient recycling. Draft guidelines have been issued to this effect. Accordingly.. a battery manufacturer or importer must assign a 21-character 'Battery Pack Aadhaar Number' (BPAN) to every battery pack brought into the market. This number should be clearly visible on the battery and should not be removed.

Information related to the various stages of the battery, from the raw materials used in the battery, to consumption and recycling, is stored through this number. A new BPAN should be assigned if battery characteristics change due to recycling or repurposing. The ministry hopes that this will bring transparency, accountability and stability in the battery ecosystem. Battery performance and environmental impact can also be accurately tracked. The central government hopes that this BPAN will play a key role in the efficiency of second-life usage, enforcement of regulations and recycling.

80-90 percent of the total demand for lithium-ion batteries in India comes from electric vehicles. That is why EV batteries will be given priority in the first phase and this policy will be implemented. This also applies to industrial batteries above 2 kWh. It will be implemented through the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) prescribed by the Automotive Industry Standards Committee (AISC). Representatives of battery manufacturers, EV manufacturers, recyclers, testing agencies and regulatory bodies will be on this committee. The government hopes that this identification number will also prevent fake batteries.
