Russia-Ukraine war, Iran-US, If we look at Israel's war, the role of drones and missiles in modern wars can be understood. In 'Operation Sindoor', India destroyed the Chinese and Turkish drones launched by Pakistan and neutralized Pakistan's air defense systems that were trying to thwart its attacks. It is with that enthusiasm that India is focusing on the manufacture, development and use of combat drones.
India has undertaken three projects for the manufacture of drones that can attack inland areas beyond the borders. First, the Defense Equipment Procurement Board approved the production of four squadrons (about 60) of Ghatak stealth unmanned drones at a cost of Rs.39,000 crore. Under the second project, it invited bids for 87 medium-altitude long-endurance drones at a cost of Rs 30,000 crore. Recently, the process of procuring surveillance, attack drones and loitering munitions that attack the enemy with Rs.20 thousand crores has been taken up. Around 600 companies are engaged in the manufacture of domestic drones, of which 100 companies focus on the manufacture of combat drones. The most important of these are in Hyderabad.
In addition to Pakistan, China, Turkey...
India will provide 5 lakh personnel in five years to manage the drone forces. Army has trained around 50 thousand people so far. They were mobilized as special drone platoons called 'Ashni' and deployed in 380 infantry battalions. Paramilitary forces like CISF and BSF are also training drone operators. The Border Security Force (BSF) has started the first drone warfare school in Madhya Pradesh. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) alone has set up special training schools at places like Hyderabad, Bhilai and Behror to train more than seven thousand personnel in drone piloting and air response. Sophisticated hybrid warfare units like the Bhairav Force have been formed in the army to penetrate deep into enemy territory and engage targets with drones. By 2030, India aims to fully use drones in all military branches.
China is the world leader in the manufacture of drones. Dragon is the leader in manufacturing a range of AI-based drones, including surveillance and suicide drones. Turkey is impressing the world with low-cost precision strike drones. Pakistan is importing drones heavily from those two countries. India is taking bold steps to counter this threat. Hundreds of start-ups and big companies like Adani, Tata and Ideaforge are manufacturing drones through schemes like Make-in-India and IDEX. On the other hand, India has allocated huge funds for the purchase of drones.
Laser weapons to jam (softkill) the communication system of enemy drones; Bharat Electronics Limited is developing state-of-the-art radars and jammers to destroy drones in mid-air (hardkill) using microwave technology. The 'Sudarshan Chakra' project is working to establish a comprehensive space-based anti-drone defense network across the country by 2035. Israel is ready to share its laser based drone defense technology like Iron Dome and Iron Beam with India. America is also providing drones and related technologies to India. Indian armed forces are using advanced rifle scope systems like 'Smash 2000 Plus' from Israel. These can accurately identify and shoot down even the smallest enemy drones that come fast. Firms like 'Adani-Elbit' are making drones and anti-drone equipment using Israeli technology.
Own manufacturing...
US is strengthening border security by providing its surveillance and digital defense technologies to India. India is collecting MQ 9B Predator drones from the US to continuously monitor China's movements on the Himalayan borders and Pakistan's drones on the western borders. The US Air Force and India's Defense Research Organization (DRDO) are jointly developing new models of drones to be launched from Ningi. US shares satellite surveillance information with India. Due to this, it is possible to detect and intercept Chinese and Pakistani drones coming across the border. India is also increasing its own drone manufacturing and deployment capabilities.
