Teacher asks a question in the classroom. asks.. Some children remain silent even though they know the correct answer. The reason.. is not being able to speak in English! But there are some other girls who are self-deprecating and say that if they speak in English, they will laugh at them.
There are many such girls who run away if they speak English. 17-year-old Roshini Gupta found that children in government schools and orphanages are lagging behind in speaking this language. A special program was started three years ago with an effort to increase their English speaking skills. Currently, it is not only in some cities of the country, it has expanded to four other countries. Let's learn about the inspiring journey of this young changemaker who says that her efforts are making a difference in many children..
Loves English!
Roshini from Bangalore is studying eleventh standard in an international school there. She is more interested in English subject. Roshini says that since she was a child, she learned to speak English at home with her parents, teachers and fellow students.
'English is my favorite subject. The environment I grew up in is also a reason for this preference. My parents used to speak only English to me at home. I was also encouraged to speak this language. While in the classroom, lessons and discussions were held in this language. But knowing that not all schools and families have this type of encouragement for children. Especially in government schools, English is a subject, but there are very few people who speak it. Not to mention the children in orphanages. That's why I want to share my English language skills with those children. She recalled the occasion when the seed of her program was born from this idea saying 'Project Vidya. Interacted with the children there.
'Many of the students answered the questions I asked in their mother tongue. He also showed great interest in learning new things. But when I started speaking in English, I noticed that their enthusiasm gradually decreased. I don't seem to have as much self-confidence as I did in the beginning. There was a kind of anger and hesitation in their eyes and words. As a child, she explained a concept she had written in her mother tongue like a pearl. But the same thing could not be said in English language. It is understood that the reason why many children cannot speak English is because they are not able to express their feelings. The aim is to fill this gap with 'Project Vidya'..' Antonna Roshini.. Through this, spoken English is being taught to the students of classes 4-9.
step by step..
We want to make the children studying in government schools, orphanages and learning centers all over Bangalore to speak English fluently. In this order, we are teaching them spoken English step by step by conducting workshops as online and offline platforms. When they talk like this, if there are any mistakes, I do not correct them in the middle. These will be corrected after their words are finished. Because interrupting them in the middle may make them feel uncomfortable. Moreover, they may not be able to speak because of the fear of making more mistakes. In the matter of speaking English, first of all, we are removing the fear in them.
Instead of reading the same thing over and over again, we can learn a lot by discussing with each other, helping each other and guiding each other. The same theory is also part of our workshop sessions. Roshini says about her training methods by making children talk to each other in English, cooperate and encourage each other. Spoken English skills are being taught online to children in some countries. For this purpose some young volunteers have been hired. 30-40 children participate in each workshop and encourage them to learn language skills with enthusiasm through games. Not stopping at that... collecting books and giving them to poor children, teaching money management-saving lessons, teaching basic computer skills... is also done. This teenager, who received mentorship from an international charity called '1M1B Foundation (One Million for One Billion)', has conducted more than 50 workshops through its program so far. Thus, more than 1700 children have been trained in spoken English.
'My future goal is to expand the project education to more states and countries. This program is already making a difference in some children. Irrespective of social and economic status, if every child can speak English with courage, my effort will be successful..' Antonna Roshini.. Plays basketball in her spare time.
