We have many festivals throughout the year. There are many special occasions in Jyeshtha month as well. This year, Nija Jyeshtam is starting after the leap month. The presiding deity of Jyeshtha Nakshatra is Indra. It is Jyeshta because it is the month when the full moon occurs when the moon is in this nakshatra.
On Jyeshtha Shuklapadyami, women perform Karveera Vrat for good luck. That means they worship the Goddess with Gunnerupoos. Some also do Bhadra Chatushtaya Vrat. Shraddhakarmas are performed on Vidayana and tarpanas are offered to the patriarchs. This day is also known as 'Sopa Padamu'. Rambhavrat is performed on the day called 'Rambhatritiya'. 'Rambha' means 'banana'. It is customary to worship and dress the golden image of Goddess Parvati under a banana tree. Brahmapurana says that Shuddhachavithi is the day when Goddess Parvati incarnated as Umadevi. 'Shukla Devi' is worshiped on this day. Shuddhapanchami is also auspicious day for patriarchs. It is said that Bhima, who could not bear hunger at all, fasted on this one day with perseverance and got the meritorious result of fasting for twenty four days. Trivikrama Murthy is worshiped on Jyeshtha Shukla Dwadashi, popularly known as Champaka Dwadashi. It is said that Adi Shankara's Kailasa Yatra took place on this day. Vatsavitri Vrat is performed on the first full moon day. The banyan tree is a form of Lord Vishnu. Savitri, who fought with Yama and brought her husband Satyavan alive, is worshiped on this day. Trilochana Pooja, Tindukashtamivratam and Seetalashtami vratam are performed on Bahulaashtami day. Multiple Ekadashi is called Apara Ekadashi and Yogi Ekadashi. The multiple Dwadashi of Lord Vishnu in his Kurma avatar is popularly known as 'Kurma Jayanti'. Vrata Vidhan says that those who cannot do Vatsavitri Vrata on Full Moon can do it on Amavasya Nadi.
