'Thiru' means auspicious. 'Pappavai' means fasting. Gitamalika Tiruppavai, a hymn of thirty pashuras sung in Moola Dravidian by Godadevi in praise of Vishnu. It is a tradition to sing each Pasuram on a different day and offer Pongali made of jaggery to the Supreme Lord. These Pasuras preach Madhura Bhakti. Vaishnavites call this Vrata Margashirsha Vratamani, Margali and Dhanurmasa Vratamani. There have been many translations of these Pasuras in Telugu as well. Great poets and philosophers like Devulapalli Krishna Sastri, Lakshmana Yathindru, etc. were among those who translated. It is a great work of Thiruppavai not only in terms of Vaishnava literature but also in terms of literary values. A nice spark for divine realization.
