Aseventeen-year-old girl, married... set up a school for girls. Children are excitedly going to her to correct their letters. Some people winked at that. Is education necessary for girls, that is for all castes? thought When she was going to school, she was attacked as she was not listened to. Insulting with vulgar language, pelting stones, throwing mud... they were harassed in many ways. However, she didn't flinch, she didn't flinch! She used to put another saree in the bag and go to school and change the mud saree. Starting with six girls, her efforts expanded to three schools and 150 students within three years. The couple set up 18 schools in Pune area in another year. Today's women's education and women's education are rooted on the foundation laid by them standing against the society 175 years ago. That couple - Savitribai Phule and Jyoti Rao Phule. Today is Savitribai's birthday.
Savitribai was born on January 3, 1831 in Naigaon village of Satara district in Maharashtra to Khandoji Nevase Patil and Lakshmi. As per the custom of that time, she was married to Jyoti Rao Phule at the age of ten. He has modern feelings. Noticing Savitri's agility and enthusiasm, Phule taught her to read and write. Savitri joined a missionary organization in Ahmednagar and also completed teacher training. For starting schools to educate all girls regardless of caste, she faced severe resistance from the society of that time. The father-in-law also took his son and daughter-in-law out of the house. None of this has dampened the couple's desire for social reform. In 1852, Savitri founded 'Mahila Seva Mandal' and started educating women about their rights. Child marriages were opposed and inter-caste marriages were encouraged. He fought and won to eradicate the evils practiced by the society against widows. The Phule couple considered it their social responsibility to fight against the caste system and patriarchy and worked hard for the upliftment of the downtrodden.
After the death of her husband Jyoti Rao Phule, Savitri set fire to his pyre herself. She worked with her husband until then - and then continued the journey alone. He successfully led the Satya Shodhak Samaj started by Jyoti Rao in 1873 to fight against social evils. Abolition of untouchability, education of Dalits was given priority. He published poetry volumes called 'Kavya Phule' and 'Bawan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar'. In 1897, while ministering to the plague victims, he contracted the disease and died. Pune University was renamed Savitribai Phule University in memory of that sacrifice. In recognition of the services of Savitri Bai who established the first school for girls in the country, we are celebrating her birth anniversary as 'Mahila Upadhyaya Day'.
Half of the problems humanity is facing today are self-inflicted. We are experiencing the result of destruction of natural resources. The generation after us will have to bear the loss even more. If we still don't wake up, our predecessors will not forgive us.
