Scrub Typhus: ‘తేవీటి పురుగు’... తేలిగ్గా తీసుకోవద్దు

పొల్లాల్లో, పొదల్లో.. పచ్చిక బయళ్లలో.. శుభ్రతలేని, తేమ ఎక్కువగా ఉండే ప్రాంతాల్లో సంచరించే ఓ చిన్న కీటకం చిగ్గర్ మైట్. కొన్ని ప్రాంతాల్లో దీన్ని ‘తేవీటి పురుగు’ అంటారు. తలలో పేను కంటే చిన్నగా ఉండే ఈ కీటకం కరిస్తే ‘స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్’ వ్యాధి సోకుతుంది. సకాలంలో చికిత్స తీసుకోకపోతే అనారోగ్యంపాలై ప్రాణాపాయ పరిస్థితులు ఎదురవుతాయి. రాష్ట్రంలో ఈ ఏడాది ఇప్పటివరకు ఈ కేసులు 1,715 నమోదు కాగా, 12 మంది మరణించడం కలవరపెడుతోంది. అయితే డెంగీ, మలేరియా ఇతర వ్యాధుల్లా ‘స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్’ కేసులు కూడా ఏటా నమోదు అవుతుంటాయని, ఎవరూ ఆందోళన చెందవద్దని వైద్య, ఆరోగ్యశాఖ అధికారులు ధైర్యం నింపుతున్నా.. ఎక్కడా లేనివిధంగా మన రాష్ట్రంలోనే మరణాలు నమోదు కావడం అందరూ అప్రమత్తం కావలసిన అవసరాన్ని సూచిస్తోంది. ఈ వ్యాధిపై అధ్యయానికి జాతీయ స్థాయి నిపుణులతో టాస్క్ఫోర్స్ ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని ప్రభుత్వం నిర్ణయించింది. ఈ కీటకం ప్రమాదకరంగా రూపాంతరం చెందడం వెనుక కారణాల అన్వేషణకు బ్యాక్టీరియా జన్యుక్రమంపై అధ్యయనం చేయాలని భావిస్తోంది.
దిల్లీ, లద్దాఖ్, దాద్రా-నగర్ హవేలీ మినహా మిగతా రాష్ట్రాలు, కేంద్రపాలిత ప్రాంతాల్లో స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్ పాజిటివ్ కేసులు నమోదయ్యాయి. అత్యధికంగా తమిళనాడు (7,308), ఒడిశా (6,586), పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ (4,674), రాజస్థాన్ (3,326), మధ్యప్రదేశ్ (2,551), కర్ణాటక (1,870), ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ (1,715), అస్సాం (1,555) కేసులు నమోదయ్యాయి. మరణాలు మాత్రం ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్లోనే చోటుచేసుకోవడం గమనార్హం.
- ఈ కీటకం కుట్టినచోట ఓరియెంటియా సుట్సుగముషి బ్యాక్టీరియా ద్వారా శరీరంపై కాలినట్లు చిన్న మచ్చ ఏర్పడుతుంది. మచ్చ లేకున్నా వ్యాధి సోకిన లక్షణాలు 7 నుంచి 20 రోజుల్లో బయటపడతాయి.
- తలనొప్పి, ఒళ్లు నొప్పులు, జ్వరం, వణుకు లాంటి లక్షణాలు కనిపిస్తే వెంటనే వైద్యులను సంప్రదించాలి.
- ఎలుకలను కుట్టిన తర్వాత ఈ కీటకాలు మనుషుల్ని కుడితే బ్యాక్టీరియా ప్రభావం ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది.
- రోగ నిరోధక శక్తి తక్కువగా ఉన్న పిల్లలు, దీర్ఘకాలిక వ్యాధులున్న వృద్ధులపై స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్ ప్రభావం ఎక్కువ ఉంటుంది.
- స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్ అనుమానిత లక్షణాలు ప్రాథమిక స్థాయిలో గుర్తిస్తే ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బందీ ఉండదని, డాక్సీసైక్లిన్, అజిత్రోమైసిన్ మాత్రలతో నయం చేయవచ్చని వైద్యులు చెబుతున్నారు.
- ఆలస్యం చేస్తే ఇన్ఫెక్షన్లు పెరిగి ప్రాణాంతకమయ్యే ప్రమాదం ఉంది.
గడ్డి పొదలు, శుభ్రతలేని తోటలు, నిర్వహణ లేని ప్రాంతాలు.. ఎలుకలు సంచరించే ప్రాంతాలే స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్ హాట్ స్పాట్లు. వర్షాకాలంలో మొదలై శీతాకాలం ముగిసేవరకు తేవీటి పురుగుల తాకిడి ఎక్కువ. ఇటీవల వరుస తుపాన్లతో వీటికి మరింత అనుకూల వాతావరణం ఏర్పడిందని నిపుణులు భావిస్తున్నారు.
- చంకలు, తొడల మధ్య భాగాల్లో స్నానం చేశాక తడి లేకుండా శుభ్రంగా తుడుచుకోవాలి.
- శుభ్రమైన, బాగా దులిపి పరిశీలించిన తర్వాతే దుస్తులు, సాక్సులు, బూట్లు వేసుకోవాలి.
- కీటకాలు ఇంట్లోకి చొరబడకుండా, కుట్టకుండా జాగ్రత్తలు పాటించాలి.
- వైద్యుల సూచన మేరకు చర్మానికి కీటక నివారిణి క్రీములు రాసుకోవడం ఉత్తమం.
- ఆరుబయట పొదలు, గడ్డి ఉన్న ప్రాంతాలకు వెళ్లేటప్పుడు శరీరాన్ని పూర్తిగా కప్పి ఉంచే దస్తులు, పాదాలు కప్పి ఉంచేలా సాక్సులు, బూట్లు ధరించాలి.
- పొలాలు, పార్కులకు వెళ్లేటప్పుడు గడ్డి ప్రదేశాల్లో నేరుగా నేలపై కూర్చోవద్దు. కింద వస్త్రం వేసుకోవాలి. ఇంటికి వచ్చాక ఆ దస్తులు బాగా దులపాలి/ వేడి నీటిలో నానబెట్టి ఉతకాలి.
- ఇంటి పరిసరాల చుట్టూ పొదలు, గడ్డి ఎప్పటికప్పుడు తొలగించాలి. పచ్చదనం, పచ్చిక బయళ్లు, గృహోపకరణ సామగ్రి నిర్వహణలో జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోవాలి.
- ఈ కీటకాలు ఎలుకల శరీరానికి అతుక్కుని జీవించే అవకాశం ఉంటుంది. అందుకే ఇంట్లో ఎలుకలు లేకుండా జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోవాలి.
- పెంపుడు జంతువులు బయట తిరిగి వస్తే వాటి శరీరంపై కీటకాలు లేకుండా జాగ్రత్తపడాలి.
- కార్యాలయాలు, గోదాముల్లో శుభ్రత పాటించాలి. వ్యర్థాలు, ఆహార వ్యర్థాల నిర్వహణ సమర్థంగా ఉండాలి.
- చెదల నివారణ తరహాలోనే ఎప్పటికప్పుడు ఎలుకలు, కీటకాల నివారణ చర్యలు చేపట్టాలి.
స్క్రబ్ టైఫస్కు కారణమైన చిగ్గర్ కీటకం తలలో పేను కంటే చిన్నగా ఉంటుంది. తల్లి కీటకం నుంచి బ్యాక్టీరియా గుడ్లలోని లార్వాకు చేరుతుంది. గుడ్ల నుంచి పిల్లలు బయటకు వచ్చి శరీరంలో చంకలు, గజ్జల్లో అతుక్కుపోయి రక్తం పీలుస్తుంటాయి. శరీరంపై దురద లేదా ఏదో కుట్టినట్లు అనిపిస్తే వెంటనే అప్రమత్తం కావాలి. ఒంటి నొప్పులు, జ్వరం వంటి లక్షణాలకు సాధారణ మాత్రలు వాడుతూ కొందరు నిర్లక్ష్యం చేస్తున్నారు. దీంతో తాత్కాలికంగా జ్వరం తగ్గినా, ఆ తర్వాత ప్రభావం బయటపడుతోంది. దీర్ఘకాలిక వ్యాధులు ఉన్నవారు సకాలంలో పరీక్షలు చేయించుకోకపోతే ఈ బ్యాక్టీరియా ప్రభావంతో ఇబ్బందులు ఎదురవుతాయి. ఐజీఎం ఎలీసా పరీక్షల ద్వారా పాజిటివ్ కేసులను గుర్తించే వీలుంది. ప్రభుత్వ వైద్యశాలల్లో మందులు, పరీక్షలు అందుబాటులో ఉన్నాయి. చెమ్మ ఉన్నచోట కీటక సంచారానికి అవకాశం ఎక్కువ. కీటక నివారిణుల వంటివి వాడుతూ తగిన జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోవాలి. ఇది కొత్తగా వచ్చిన వ్యాధి కాదు. సకాలంలో అప్రమత్తమైతే తక్కువ ఖర్చుతో సులువుగా నయం చేయవచ్చు.

Chigger mite is a small insect that roams in fields, bushes, pastures, unsanitary and humid areas. In some areas it is called 'Teveti Vyri'. The bite of this insect, which is smaller than a head louse, causes scrub typhus. If not treated in time, it can lead to illness and death. 1,715 cases have been registered in the state so far this year and 12 people have died. However, like Dengue, Malaria and other diseases, 'Scrub Typhus' cases are also registered every year, and although the medical and health officials are encouraging people not to worry, the record of deaths in our state like nowhere else indicates the need for everyone to be alert. Tamil Nadu (7,308), Odisha (6,586), West Bengal (4,674), Rajasthan (3,326), Madhya Pradesh (2,551), Karnataka (1,870), Andhra Pradesh (1,715) and Assam (1,555) reported the highest number of cases. - After taking a bath, the areas between the armpits and thighs should be wiped clean without getting wet.

- Do not sit directly on the ground in grassy areas while visiting fields and parks. Wear a cloth underneath. After coming home, the clothes should be washed well/soaked in hot water.
- Shrubs and grass around the house should be removed from time to time. Care should be taken in the management of greenery, lawns and household equipment.
- These insects can survive by sticking to the body of mice. That's why care should be taken to keep the house free from mice.
- If pets come back outside, make sure that there are no insects on their body.
- Cleanliness should be observed in offices and warehouses. Waste and food waste management should be efficient.
- Measures for rodent and insect prevention should be taken from time to time in the same manner as pest prevention.
The chigger insect that causes scrub typhus is smaller than a head louse. Bacteria from the mother insect are transferred to the larvae in the eggs. The babies come out of the eggs and stick to the armpits and groin of the body and suck blood. If you feel itching or something stinging on your body, you should be alerted immediately. Some are neglecting to use common pills for symptoms like pain in the stool and fever. Even if the fever is reduced temporarily, after that the effect is revealed. People with chronic diseases can suffer from the effects of these bacteria if they are not tested on time. Positive cases can be identified by IgM ELISA tests. Medicines and tests are available in government hospitals. Where there is urine there is more chance of insect migration. Adequate precautions should be taken while using insecticides.
