Fact check: 'Social' accounts in the hands of IT department.. How true is the campaign?

Fact check | Internet Desk: The Center has denied the ongoing campaign that the Income Tax Department will no longer access citizens' social media accounts and e-mails. It has been said that the campaign that these regulations will come into force from the next financial year (April 1, 2026) is completely untrue. According to Section 247 of the Income Tax Act, 2025, the Center said that the powers to check social media and e-mails should be used only during raids and searches conducted by the IT department. It should also be used only when there is clear evidence of serious tax evasion allegations. It said the IT department has no authority to access the digital platforms of income tax payers who are acting legally. The Center has made it clear that the power to seize documents during searches and inspections is also in the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the seizure of digital records has been newly included in accordance with the changed circumstances.
