Equity market investments generally involve risk. It is more in small cap mutual funds. These select stocks for investment from the small cap category. It includes all stocks except the largest 250 stocks (by market capitalization). They mainly invest in shares of companies with a market capitalization of less than Rs.5,000 crore. Small cap funds are associated with higher risk as compared to other types of equity funds. Even small fluctuations in the market can have a huge impact on the share prices of small cap companies. However, these funds have the potential to provide significant returns on long-term investments of 8-10 years.

Small-cap mutual funds can provide higher returns when markets are bullish than large-cap and mid-cap funds. However, there are chances of losses in the short term. Risk is high in small cap funds. Therefore, investors who invest in it should be prepared for losses at times.
