మార్మికతకు దూరంగా...
మహారాష్ట్రలోని గొండూర్లో సాధారణ విశ్వకర్మ కుటుంబంలో జన్మించారు రామ్ సుతార్. ఆయన తండ్రి దేవతా విగ్రహాలను పోత పోయడం చిన్ననాటినుంచే వీక్షించేవారు. ఆరాధ్య దైవాల ప్రతిమల తయారీకి వాడాల్సిన పదార్థాలు, కొలతల గురించీ, పవిత్ర రూపాల గురించీ అవగాహన ఏర్పరచుకున్నారు. స్థానికంగా, సంప్రదాయంగా, కుటుంబపరంగా అలవడిన శిల్ప కళకు బొంబాయిలోని సర్ జేజే స్కూల్ ఆఫ్ ఆర్ట్ శిక్షణ ఆధునిక శైలిని, మెలకువలను అద్దింది. అక్కడ ఆయన శరీర నిర్మాణ శాస్త్రాన్ని, శిల్పకళా సూత్రాలను నేర్చుకున్నారు. తన తోటి శిల్పులు, చిత్రకళాకారులు ఐరోపా-అమెరికా ఆధునిక కళా రూపాలకు, నైరూప్య కళకు మళ్లినా సుతార్ మాత్రం సంప్రదాయ, సాకార స్పష్టతకు అంటిపెట్టుకున్నారు. కొత్తగా స్వాతంత్య్రం పొందిన జాతికి కళ్లెదుట సజీవంగా కనబడే మహాపురుషుల ప్రతిమలు, విస్పష్ట సాంస్కృతిక ప్రతీకలు స్ఫూర్తి, ఉత్సాహాలు ఇస్తాయని గ్రహించి తన శిల్పకళలో ప్రజలకు సులభంగా అర్థమయ్యే యదార్థ వాదానికి పట్టంకట్టారు. బహిరంగ ప్రదేశాలలో ప్రతిష్ఠించే శిల్పాలు ప్రజలతో నేరుగా సంభాషిస్తున్నట్లు కనిపించాలే తప్ప అర్థంకాని మార్మికత, అస్పష్టత వాటిలో ఉట్టిపడకూడదని సుతార్ భావించారు. ఇదే ఆయన శిల్పకళను నడిపించిన సూత్రం. ఆయన మలచిన మహాపురుషుల విగ్రహాలు హుందాగా, నేరుగా ప్రజా హృదయాలను తాకుతాయి. అలాగని అవి ఫొటో తీసినట్లు ఉంటాయని కాదు. ఆ విగ్రహాలలో భారీతనం, ఆదర్శాలు, నైతిక విలువలు మూర్తీభవిస్తాయి. ఆ విగ్రహ మూర్తుల ముఖకవళికలలో గాంభీర్యం, సంయమనపూరిత భావోద్వేగం ఉట్టిపడతాయి. శరీర భంగిమలో నింపాదిగా చైతన్యం మూర్తీభవించి ఉంటుంది.
సజీవ మూర్తిమత్వం
ఛాతీ వరకు మాత్రమే తీర్చిదిద్దిన ప్రతిమలు మొదలుకుని వందలాది అడుగుల ఎత్తయిన విగ్రహాలదాకా- సుతార్ పనితనం అద్భుతం. 182 మీటర్ల సర్దార్ వల్లభ్భాయ్ పటేల్ విగ్రహం ఆయన శిల్ప చాతుర్యానికీ, సాంకేతిక నైపుణ్యానికీ ఆకాశమంత ఎత్తయిన నిదర్శనం. ఆ విగ్రహం నిలకడగా సూటిగా చూసే చూపులో, స్థిరంగా నిలిచిన తీరులో, దీక్షగా అడుగు ముందుకు వేస్తున్న భంగిమలో ఉక్కుమనిషి పటేల్ దృఢ వ్యక్తిత్వం ప్రస్ఫుటంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. అంతటి భారీ విగ్రహంలో శరీర భాగాలు చక్కగా పొందికగా గంభీరంగా ఉండేట్లు చెక్కడంలో సుతార్ శిల్పకళా ప్రజ్ఞ ఉట్టిపడింది. అది ప్రపంచంలో అతికొద్దిమంది శిల్పులకే సాధ్యం. పటేల్ బృహత్తర విగ్రహానికి ముందు గాంధీ, నెహ్రూ, సుభాష్ చంద్రబోస్, అంబేడ్కర్ వంటి జాతీయ మహా నాయకుల శిల్పాలకు సుతార్ రూపుదిద్దారు. వాటిని భారతదేశంతోపాటు ఇతర దేశాల్లోనూ ప్రతిష్ఠించారు. ఈ ఆదర్శ మూర్తుల విశిష్ట లక్షణాలు సుతార్ శిల్పాలలో చక్కగా ప్రతిఫలిస్తాయి. గాంధీజీ చేత కర్రపట్టి స్థిరచిత్తంతో ముందుకు అడుగు వేస్తున్నట్లూ, అంబేడ్కర్ పుస్తకం పట్టుకుని చేయి ముందుకుచాచి రాజ్యాంగ ధర్మాన్ని ప్రబోధిస్తున్నట్లూ చిత్రించడం ద్వారా సుతార్ మన జాతి నిర్మాతల మహోన్నత నైతిక వ్యక్తిత్వానికి దృశ్యరూపమిచ్చారు.
సుతార్ శిలలతో, కాంస్యంతో, కాంక్రీటుతో ప్రతిమలను సృజించి సవ్యసాచినని చాటుకున్నారు. అయితే- కాంస్య విగ్రహాలు కాలపరీక్షలో చెక్కుచెదరవనీ, వాటిలో గాంభీర్యం, హుందాతనం ఉట్టిపడతాయనీ, ప్రాచీన శిల్పకళను ఆధునికతతో మేళవించడం వాటితో బాగా సాధ్యమవుతుందన్నది ఆయన భావన. సుతార్ శిల్పాలలో నాటకీయత కన్నా సంయమనం ఎక్కువ. రామ్ కింకర్ బైజ్ వంటి కళాకారులు ఆధునిక భారతీయ కళలో వాస్తవాన్ని అతిశయోక్తిగా చిత్రించడం, నిరాకార భావోద్వేగాలను, ఆధ్యాత్మిక భావాలను నైరూప్యంగా చిత్రించడం వంటి శైలులను ప్రవేశపెట్టారు. సుతార్ దీనికి భిన్నంగా ఆర్భాటం లేని ఆధునికతను ఒద్దికైన యదార్థ వాదాన్నీ మేళవించారు. ఆయన సంప్రదాయ పిడివాదానికీ, దానిపై ఆధునికుల తిరుగుబాటుకూ దూరంగా ఉంటూ మానవీయ ఆధునికతకు పట్టం కట్టారు. ఆయన శైలి అంతర్జాతీయ శిల్పి అగస్టీ రోడిన్ భావోద్వేగభరిత సహజత్వానికి దగ్గరగా ఉంటుంది. అదే సమయంలో సుతార్ భావజాల పునాదులు గాంధేయ నైతిక విలువలలో, జాతీయవాద చారిత్రక దృక్పథం, వలస పాలనానంతర స్వేచ్ఛా భారత ఆశయాలు, ఆకాంక్షలలో పాదుకుని ఉన్నాయి.

పలు భాషలు, సంస్కృతులు, భావజాలాలకు నెలవైన భారతదేశంలో సుతార్ కళ విస్పష్ట రూపంతో ఏకీకరణ శక్తిగా నిలుస్తోంది. ఆయన కళాకృతులకు విమర్శకులు అర్థాలు చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు. సామాన్య భారతీయులు సైతం ఆయన శిల్పాలలో తమ వారసత్వాన్ని చూసుకుంటారు, సుతార్ చెక్కిన మహనీయుల విగ్రహాలపై భక్తిగౌరవాలను చాటుకుంటారు. ఈ విధంగా జాతి ఆత్మతో సుతార్ కళ నేరుగా బంధం ఏర్పరచుకుంటుంది. సుతార్కు ఎన్నో అవార్డులు, రివార్డులు వచ్చినా ఆయన శాశ్వత కళా వారసత్వం వాటిలో లేదు. అది పార్కులలో, విద్యాసంస్థలు, విధాన సభలు, పార్లమెంటు ప్రాంగణాలలో, అంతర్జాతీయ బహిరంగ స్థలాలలో ప్రతిష్ఠించిన విగ్రహాలలో చిరస్థాయిగా నిలిచిపోయింది. చివరగా రామ్ సుతార్ జాతీయ స్మృతులకు ఉత్కృష్ట రూపునిచ్చిన అద్భుత శిల్పి. భారతదేశ నైతిక విలువలకు, రాజకీయ భావాలకు బృహత్తర రూపునిచ్చిన సృజనశీలి. తరతరాలుగా నిలిచిపోయేలా భారత జాతీయతను దృశ్యీకరించిన స్రష్ట రామ్ సుతార్.

Ram Sutar was born in a simple Vishwakarma family in Gondur, Maharashtra. His father used to watch the casting of idols from his childhood. They formed an understanding about the materials, measurements and sacred forms to be used for making idols of worshipful deities. Training at the Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay brought modern style and vibrancy to the local, traditional and family-oriented art of sculpture. There he learned anatomy and principles of sculpture. While his fellow sculptors and painters turned to European-American modern art forms and abstract art, Sutar stuck to traditional, tangible clarity. Realizing that the statues of great men and vivid cultural symbols that are seen alive before the eyes of a newly independent nation will give inspiration and enthusiasm, he has strived for realism in his art that is easily understood by the people. Sutar felt that the sculptures placed in public places should appear to communicate directly with the public and should not be imbued with incomprehensible mystery and ambiguity. This is the principle that guided his sculpture. The idols of great men made by him touch the hearts of the people soberly and directly. It does not mean that they are photographed. The idols embody greatness, ideals and moral values. The facial expressions of the idols exude elegance and restrained emotion. Consciousness is embodied in the posture of the body.
Living Sculpture
Starting from chest-only busts to hundreds of feet tall statues - Sutar's work is amazing. The 182 meter statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is a sky-high proof of his sculptural ingenuity and technical skill. The strong personality of the steel man Patel is clearly visible in the statue's steady direct gaze, steady stance, and forward stepping posture. Sutar's sculptures are more restrained than dramatic. Artists such as Ram Kinkar Baiz introduced styles such as exaggerated depiction of reality, abstract depiction of formless emotions and spiritual feelings in modern Indian art. Sutar, in contrast to this, combined the realist arguments that advocated modernity without fuss. He was far away from traditional dogmatism and the revolt of the moderns and crowned humanistic modernity. His style is close to the emotional naturalism of international sculptor Auguste Rodin. At the same time, the foundations of Sutar ideology are rooted in Gandhian moral values, nationalist historical perspective, free Indian ambitions and aspirations after colonial rule.
