Underground drainage system in the city years ago
Construction as per the requirements of 50 years back then
Severe drainage problems in 25 years
The reason for the huge increase in the city population
Ignorant corporation officials
UGD-2060 Initiation to design DPR (Andhra Jyoti, Vijayawada) :Corporation is alerted due to the fear of shutdown of Underground Drainage (UGD) in the city. According to the instructions of Commissioner Dhyanchandra, the engineering department is designing a new UGD DPR on the basis of future requirements under the name 'UGD-2060'. At that time, an action plan was prepared for its establishment based on the needs of 50 years and more, and the DPR was designed accordingly. By 2010, 80 percent of the UGD system was made available across the city with the funds available in various forms such as general funds, JNNURM funds. Even with this system in place, surplus works and non-connection to sewage treatment plants are still problematic. The short length of the pipelines at that time also became a problem. UGD pipes are laid at a depth of 18 feet in the main roads. Now it is becoming a problem to pick them up.
Boosting huge construction sector
The population density in Vijayawada has increased in recent years. Currently the population of the city is 14 lakhs. Migration took place in large numbers as Upadhi became a center of imagination. The number of renters has increased. Encroachments also increased along hilly areas, canals and the banks of the Krishna river. In the wake of the removal of encroachments, construction of houses for the poor was done through schemes like Vambe and JNNURM in the city. If all these are one step, the huge construction sector will get a boost. Huge grouphouses, gated communities, apartments, and individual housing developments have proliferated. Floors were built upon floors. With this, the city of Vijayawada is teeming with population density. Sewage production has also increased.
UGD problems across the city
Only 70 percent UGD has been done in Circle-1. Another 30 percent is to be done. Out of the 70 percent that happened, except for 30 percent in HB colony, the remaining 40 percent was not in use. At present 40 percent of this UGD network is buried. There is no UGD in Divisions 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64 of Ajitasinghnagar under Circle-2. Fresh tenders have been called for Rs.30 crores only in 1 and 30 divisions. Although 100% UGD has been completed in Circle-3, the manholes are overflowing due to increase in sewage production. UGD problems often arise in Patamata, Darshipet, Mughalrajapuram, Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, Benzi Circle, Labbipet etc.
The calculation is wrong..!
At the beginning of 2000, the population of the city was 8.5 lakhs. Keeping in view the future needs of the day, the Underground Drainage Scheme (UGD) Action Plan has been prepared. By 2025, all those plans have been scrapped. Errors occurred regarding the selected distribution network. Keeping the cost aspect in mind, if UGD is created on the basis of 50-year needs estimation, it will be lost for years. Officials estimate that funds of Rs.150 crore will be required to complete the balance works in Circle-2. Rs.200 crores in circle-1 and Rs.150 crores are required for replacing pipes in problematic areas of circle-3.
