Each creature in the universe works hard to live comfortably. All living things except man live by acquiring food day by day. A man who thinks himself superior is running like a deer running after mirages with the thirst to earn enough money for a few generations. Swami Vivekananda said that even though he realized that he would not be able to take Chilligavwa with him when he left this world, his thirst for money could not be quenched. The purpose of human birth is to help others. Real devotion is to be able to live with humanity. He called it spiritual upliftment. It is with that concept that the saying 'Atmano Mokshartha Jagat Hitayacha' was propagated. It doesn't matter if I go to hell, it is enough if the mantra I say is useful for popular development - Acharya Ramanuju revealed the mantra taught by the Guru to the world. Sankara Bhagwatpadula says in Bhajagovinda Stotra, 'Ma Kuru Dhana Jana Yauvana Garvam Harati Nimeshatkala Ssarvam'. Do not be proud of having money, youth and retinue. Somehow they warned mankind that all these things come and go with time.
Mahatmas exhorted that everything is divine and kindness is divinity. An example can be mentioned in the life of Sant Ekanatha, a great devotee of Vithalu from Maharashtra. Once a group of saints took Ganges water from Prayag to anoint Ramalingeshwar in Rameswaram. Among them was Ekanatha. As they were traveling from a deserted area, they saw a donkey waddling with a thud. All the saints see it and go on their way, but Ekanatha douses the donkey with the Ganges water he is carrying. All the fellow saints accuse him by pouring the holy water that should be anointed to Lord Shiva on a despicable donkey and insulting the Supreme Lord. To which Ekanatha replied, 'Sages, if you believe that the Supreme Being is all, then that donkey is also there. She made it clear that I have complete faith that the Ganga water that she drank went directly to Lord Shiva! Mercy does not discriminate between good and bad. It is like rain from the sky. People like Sibi Chakravarthy, Rantideva, Dadhichi and Gautama Buddha died because of compassion. The real virtue is to give others the opportunity to live high and live like that. That mercy is in mercy. Being human is our real offering to God.
