Through social engineering.. cybercriminals are committing ghostpairing scams. Scammers.. through known WhatsApp contacts of users Hey, is this you in this photo? Or you will get a fraudulent message saying I just found your picture. A similar message will contain a different link internally. So when users click on the link they get.. a fake webpage will open.
Without OTP or scanning.. your WhatsApp account will be connected to hackers device without your knowledge. Once they get hold of them, they will see all your personal chats, photos and videos. Your contacts list will be stolen. Scams by sending messages to others in your name. Eventually you will be locked out of your account.
How to avoid ghostpairing scam
- Don't click on unknown or suspicious links.
- Check 'Linked Devices' option in WhatsApp settings often. Remove any unknown devices immediately.
- Two-step verification must be enabled.
